Runner Rugs

All of the rugs in this category are known as runners, which means the width is significantly narrower than the length. Often used in hallways, kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas with more length available than width.

Where Runner Rugs Work Best

Runner rugs are long, narrow rugs designed for hallways, kitchens, entry passages, bedside spaces, and other areas where a standard rectangle is too wide. They add color, pattern, and a more finished walking path without covering the full width of the floor. Runner lengths and widths vary, so the actual measurements matter more than the general size label.

How to Place a Runner Rug

In a hallway, center the runner and leave a visible strip of flooring along both sides. In a galley kitchen, place it where it supports the main work zone without catching under cabinet doors or appliances. Beside a bed, a runner can provide a long soft landing. Avoid pushing the rug tightly from wall to wall unless the space and design specifically call for that look.

How to Choose Runner Length

Measure the usable floor span, not the full wall-to-wall dimension. Account for door swings, thresholds, vents, stairs, and transitions into adjacent rooms. A runner should usually stop before it collides with another rug or fixed feature. Since widths and lengths differ by brand, confirm exact product dimensions before ordering for a narrow hallway or fitted kitchen.
